Our Degree Programs

Overview

The University of New Mexico Department of Music is the largest and most comprehensive music program in New Mexico. Our program strives to develop the complete musician, one who is not solely interested in his or her primary instrument, but one who engages the world around them with and through their music. The extensive course offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate level allow students to shape their artistic path and reach their full potential.

Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Music has a wide variety of undergraduate offerings to support its undergraduate degree programs. Music majors at UNM begin taking music classes as freshmen. These courses usually include private lessons, music theory, ear training, a major ensemble, and Concert Music. After completing 26 hours in University College with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, a student may apply for formal admission to the College of Fine Arts and declare a major in music. The music faculty will help a student decide which degree program is most appropriate.
