Jazz Studies

Our Program Concentrations

Jazz Studies

The Jazz Studies program at UNM provides a comprehensive education in the area of jazz, leading to a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies. The performing ensembles include two Big Bands and several small Jazz Combos. Other courses include a four-semester sequence of improvisation, jazz arranging, jazz theory/keyboard and jazz history. Jazz classes are open to all UNM students, regardless of major. Ensembles are by audition only, and other courses may include prerequisites.

“My UNM education is with me in everything I do as a professional musician. What makes UNM special is opportunity – you have excellent practice and performance facilities, you can play in jazz and classical ensembles, you can write new music and have it performed, you can meet and interact with world-renowned guest artists, and – perhaps most importantly – you have direct access to a faculty of outstanding musicians who are also fantastic, dedicated educators.”
