Coinciding with a move from New York to Albuquerque in late 2021, collaborative pianist James Harder joined the University of New Mexico Department of Music as a part-time vocal coach in fall 2022. For more than three decades, he balanced dual careers as a performing pianist and a licensed clinical social worker, a unique blending of disciplines that deepened both his artistry and his work with people. He retired from psychotherapy practice in 2023, and now brings to his UNM role a deep joy in music-making and teaching, relishing collaborations with students in program building and recital preparation, and valuing the collegial spirit of UNM’s warm and inclusive faculty.

Throughout his musical career, Mr. Harder has partnered with artists of the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera, as well as instrumentalists and singers in tours across the United States. He served as Vocal Coach for the inaugural season of the Pittsburgh Opera Young Artist Program, and held the same position at Glimmerglass Opera. He was also Musical Assistant to Christopher Keene, performing in the New York Lyric Opera Company’s production of Frank Martin’s Le Vin herbé.

He has accompanied master classes for Elly Ameling, Arlene Auger, Jean Kraft, Judith Raskin, Joan Sutherland, Sherrill Milnes, and many others, and was a sought-after accompanist in the voice studios of Clarice Carson, Daniel Ferro, Anna Moffo, and additional leading pedagogues. An alumnus of California State University, Fresno, Mr. Harder studied piano with Ena Bronstein-Barton and Philip Lorenz, and later with Germán Diez in New York City. He studied voice with Dorothy Renzi and Emmy Joseph and received mentoring in coaching and diction from Edward N. Beck, Nico Castel, Joan Dornemann, and James Shomate.
