Albert Laszlo, born in Munich, Germany of Hungarian heritage, received his early training on the violin and began double bass studies at the age of twelve. He later studied cello and received a Bachelor of Music degree in cello at Ohio State University where he studied with Dr. William Conable and Stephen Kates. He continued his cello studies in Boston, MA with George Neikrug.
A scholarship student of Homer Mensch at the Juilliard School, Mr. Laszlo received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Double Bass. He was a fellowship student of Eugene Levinson at the Aspen Music Festival. Mr. Laszlo served as principal bass of the both the National Chamber Orchestra of New York and I Solisti New York. In 1985 he became principal bass of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and appeared as featured soloist with the CSO. Mr. Laszlo, an Artist Faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1994, serves as Principal Bass of the Aspen Chamber Symphony.
Mr. Laszlo served on the faculty of College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati from 1992 through 2016 when he was awarded professor emeritus. Beginning in 2006 he also served on The Juilliard School faculty in both the pre-college and college programs until 2020.
Mr. Laszlo presently holds the position of professor-of-practice at The University of New Mexico where he teaches both double bass and cello.
Professor Laszlo is the author of The Double Bass Workbook and has recorded Favorites for Double Bass, a collection of his own transcriptions for double bass. He appears frequently in recital with his wife, pianist Dr. Patricia Wood.
