Eric Moore is a cellist, composer, and teacher based in Tuscany, Italy. He followed his teacher Richard Aaron from Cleveland to the University of Michigan, where he graduated summa cum laude with a triple major in cello performance, music theory, and music history. By 23 he had been principal cellist of four orchestras.
A specialist in new music, Eric has given dozens of US and world premieres, including works by Saariaho, Pintscher, Ablinger, Lang, and more. He recorded TEXTUREN, Katharina Rosenberger’s album with the Wet Ink Ensemble, which earned Album of the Year accolades, and was the only American invited to audition for the Grammy-winning Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris. As Executive Director of New Music Decanted, he produced a six-concert Saariaho retrospective festival. During a mini-residency at Illinois State University, he premiered solo works by faculty composers Alex Stephenson and Alex Taylor, and recorded Stephenson’s Veil/Flame for Navona Records.
Eric has composed more than 40 works for cello, including the 38-minute Soliloquy for solo cello and cello quartet, the 100-minute 40 Variations on “Schindler’s List,” and 12 Mantras after Bach. This November he performs his cello concerto, Circles.
With Richard Aaron, Eric co-edited the Popper 40 Etudes, required at institutions such as the San Francisco Conservatory, the University of Michigan, Juilliard, and Tianjin Juilliard. He built the 9-Volume Cellosophy Method and four online practice courses, including the Proper Popper Practice Project. If you teach cello, Cellosophy offers a free teacher directory, free training, and free certification in the Cellosophy Method. Join at cellosophy.com.
