UNM Alum Rafael Videira Named Executive Director of the International Suzuki Association
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — University of New Mexico alum Rafael Videira, DMA, has been named Executive Director of the International Suzuki Association (ISA), marking a major milestone in a career devoted to music education, performance, and international collaboration.
A Brazilian-American violist, conductor, administrator, and educator, Dr. Videira brings a global perspective to his new role, having taught and performed across the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany. He holds a Master’s degree in performance from the University of New Mexico and a Doctor of Musical Arts in viola performance and violin/viola pedagogy from the University of Oregon.
“It’s an honor to serve as Executive Director of the International Suzuki Association,” Videira said. “The Suzuki community has shaped much of my professional life, and I’m deeply inspired by the opportunity to help sustain Dr. Suzuki’s vision of music education as a pathway for developing empathy, discipline, and joy.”
Founded in 1983, the ISA is the global organization that supports and coordinates the Suzuki™ Method of music education across more than 60 countries. The Suzuki Method, developed by Japanese violinist and educator Shinichi Suzuki, is based on the belief that musical ability can be nurtured in all children much like language—through listening, repetition, encouragement, and strong family involvement. The approach emphasizes character development and community as much as musical skill, aiming to “develop fine human beings through music.”
“The heart of the Suzuki approach is the belief that every child can learn,” Videira added. “Our work at the ISA connects teachers and organizations around the world who share that belief, and ensures that Suzuki education continues to thrive for future generations.”
In addition to his international leadership role, Dr. Videira remains deeply engaged in music education in New Mexico. He resides in Albuquerque, where he leads the orchestras at Manzano High School, teaches Suzuki group classes with the 505 Suzuki Collective, and conducts the Albuquerque Youth Orchestra. His students have achieved notable success, earning recognition in competitions and admission to respected music institutions.
Michael Hix, Chair of the Department of Music, emphasized that Videira’s appointment reflects the far-reaching influence of UNM alumni. “Our alumni are doing extraordinary work across the globe, and Rafael is a shining example of that impact,” Hix said. “We are incredibly proud of him—not only for this significant leadership role, but for the values he embodies as an educator, artist, and advocate for music education. His work reflects the very best of UNM Music: excellence, service, and a deep commitment to shaping lives through the arts.”
Videira’s dedication to teaching excellence was recognized in 2018 with the Suzuki Association of the Americas Certificate of Achievement. As a performer, he was also featured on the 2023 American Viola Society album highlighting works by underrepresented composers.
With his appointment to the ISA, Dr. Videira continues to embody UNM’s tradition of alumni leadership—advancing music education worldwide while remaining rooted in service to his local community.
