departmental scholarshipS AVAILABLE TO MUSIC STUDENTS

The following available scholarships from endowments are assigned to music students. All are available on a continuing basis, but students do not normally apply for these on an individual basis; they are awarded as part of the general scholarship awards process.

In addition, the Department of Music regularly awards Department of Music scholarships as part of department operating expenses.

for undergraduate students

ANDERSON
Michael Hallvard Anderson Memorial Scholarship—for a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in music and concentrating in guitar or composition, major or minor. The award is based on merit and need; 2.5 GPA required. Preferably the award shall not be made to the same student for two consecutive years.

ANDERSON
Michael and Eric Anderson Memorial Scholarship—for a sophomore, junior or senior major or minor in music concentrating in guitar or composition. The award is based on demonstrated musical ability and financial need; 2.5 GPA required.

DEANS-BARRETT
Dr. E. A. Deans-Barrett Cello Scholarship—for an applied cello music major. Recipient is chosen based on string faculty recommendation.

DOMINGUEZ
Lawrence Dominguez Memorial Scholarship—for a student of flamenco guitar. Arrangements are in progress.

FRIENDS OF MUSIC
Friends of Music Scholarships—given by the Friends of Music to undergraduate music majors on the basis of merit.

HAYS
Martha Harrison Hays Memorial Music Scholarship—for a junior, senior music or music education major with concentration in piano. Award is based on merit and academic excellence. If no student meets the criteria exactly, a suitable candidate who embodies Martha Hays' love of music and commitment to teaching shall be chosen instead.

LARSON
Eric Larson Music Endowment—for a junior or senior who has declared music or a related field as a major, with a focus in recording and sound technology. The award is based on merit and need; 3.0 GPA required. May be awarded to the same student in successive years, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

MARYMOUNT
Marion S. Marymount "Music" Presidential Scholarship—given to a Presidential Scholar who is enrolled in the music program. Funds are awarded through the Financial Aid Office as part of the Presidential Scholarship application process. May be awarded to the same student in successive years.

MCKELVY
Charis Ann McKelvey Memorial Scholarship—for a music major enrolled in the College of Fine Arts, preferably a sophomore. The award is based on demonstration of artistic ability; a 3.0 GPA is required and the student must be a resident of Albuquerque and have graduated from the Albuquerque Public School system. This award is administered by the College of Fine Arts, and the recipient is selected with assistance of the Dean.

NITSKE
Betty Fugatt Nitske Memorial Scholarship Fund—for a full-time undergraduate major in voice, piano, organ, or music education, with preference for Sigma Alpha Iota members who are juniors and seniors. The award is based on merit and financial need; 3.0 GPA in music and 2.0 GPA overall required. May be awarded to the same student in successive semesters, provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward a degree and maintaining the required GPA.

PRESSER
Theodore Presser Foundation Scholarship—for a senior music major, to be awarded at or after the end of the student's junior year and paid at the beginning of the senior year. The award is based solely on merit. The award winner will be designated a Presser Scholar.

ROBB
Harriet and John D. Robb Scholarship—for a full-time music major seeking the Bachelor of Music in either performance or composition. The award is based on musical ability. Recipient may be an entering freshman.

STUMP
Nancy and Howard Stump Endowed Scholarship Fund—for an incoming freshman music major pursuing a degree in instrumental music. The award is based on talent and financial need; 3.0 GPA required. May be awarded to the same student in successive semesters beyond the freshman year provided he or she makes satisfactory academic progress and meets the criteria of the award.

SWEARINGEN
Addie Swearingen Music Scholarship—for an incoming freshman music major who is a permanent resident of New Mexico and who must have been in the upper one-third of his or her class during the previous academic year. The recipient is eligible for renewals of this scholarship so long as he or she meets the stated qualifications.

VEDELER
George F. and Mary Margaret Vedeler Endowed Music Scholarship—for full-time junior or senior music majors. The award is based on merit and need; 3.0 GPA required. Renewable provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward a degree and fulfills the criteria of the award.

VIOLA PEDAGOGY
Viola Pedagogy Scholarship

YEPSEN
Marjorie Yepsen & Carleen F. Farnam Endowment Scholarship—for a full-time undergraduate music student. The award is based on merit; 3.4 GPA required. Renewable up to four years; $1500 limit per year.

for graduate students

FLORA
Carolyn M. Flora Memorial Scholarship—for a full-time graduate student in music education. Renewable provided the student is making satisfactory academic progress.

FRANCK
Abraham Franck Music Fellowship—for graduate students studying music, who shall be members of a graduate string quartet selected through a national competition. The award is based on merit; 3.0 GPA required.

FREDERICK
Kurt Frederick Memorial Music Fellowship—for a graduate student in music studying violin, cello, or bass; student will also work with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The award is based on merit; student will be selected by audition.

JONES
Scott Lakin Jones Memorial Fellowship—for full-time music graduate students.

for undergraduate or graduate students

ANDERSON
Michael Anderson, Eric Anderson and Robert Elledge Music Scholarship—for a student in the band; trumpet or cornet student preferred.

ANDERSON
Anderson, Anderson and Elledge Music Scholarship Annuity—for a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student with a major in music; student must play in the band; trumpet or cornet student preferred.

ANGEL
Angel Music Scholarship—for a full-time undergraduate or graduate music or music education major. Award is based on talent, academic achievement and financial need. Specifically for students of Hispanic ethnicity. Piano major preferred, but if no pianist is qualified, others may be considered.

BATCHELLER
John Batcheller Music Endowment––for Music Education majors who want to educate students at the elementary school level. The award is based on merit and need; 3.2 GPA required. Funds may also be used to develop programs for music education in elementary schools.

BOMBARDT
Paul and Susan Bombardt Music Education Scholarship—preference given to students who are interested in pursuing careers in music education in primary and secondary schools; additional preference given to students who are the first generation in their family to attend college. The award is based on need.

BUFFETT
Irma Norelius Buffett Memorial Scholarship for Choral Programs—for students in choral music education or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on merit. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral Activities and will sing with the UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

CLARK
John Clark Choral Endowed Scholarship—for a student in choral music education or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on merit; recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral Activities and will sing with the UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

COMMUNITY CONCERT
Community Concert Award in Music—for a student majoring in music. The amount of the award is $200.

COMPOSERS' SYMPOSIUM
Composer's Symposium Endowment—funds are used to underwrite the annual Composers' Symposium.

DOLDE
Lillian Dolde Music Scholarship Fund—major or minor in music. The award is based on merit; 3.0 GPA required.

ELLINGBOE
Veloa Ellingboe Choral Endowed Scholarship—for students in choral music education or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on need. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral activities and will sing with the UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

FISKE
Joanna Franz Fiske Educational Endowment—funds may be used for music student scholarships, based on merit and need, or for benefit and advancement of the Department of Music.

GARCIA
Hector Garcia Guitar Fund—funds may be used for guitar student scholarships, or for other purposes as needed.

GARDENSWARTZ
Gardenswartz Family Endowed Scholarship Fund for Applied Voice—for an applied voice major, either upper division or graduate student, preferably in the opera program. The award is based on merit and need; 3.0 GPA required. May be awarded to the same student in successive years, but the student must audition each year.

KEITH
Joe S. and Claudia T. Keith Endowed Choral Scholarship—for students in choral music educaiton or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on merit. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Diretor of Choral Activities and will sing with the UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

KELLER
Walter & Louise Keller Memorial Music Scholarship Endowment—for a full-time undergraduate or graduate music student. The award is based on merit and financial need; 3.0 GPA required.

KUBIE
Kurt and Edith Kubie Family Fund—for a student studying string instruments in the Department of Music, preferably an incoming freshman. The award is based on merit and need.

LAURIDSEN
Morten Lauridsen Choral Music Scholarship—for students in choral music education or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based in merit. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral Activities and will sing with th UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

MARTIN
Parker Martin and Alta Mae Ryther Fields Scholarship Endowment—for a classical music student (Beethoven, Chopin traditions). The award is based on merit and need. May be awarded to the same student in successive semesters, provided the student is making satisfactory academic progress.

MCCULLOUGH-BRABSON
Ellen McCullough-Brabson Music Education Scholarship—for a student in music education; preference is for a students who has previously attended the UNM Music Prep School. Recipients are offered the opportunity to assist in the teaching of students in the Prep School.

MORELL
Pedro Morell Memorial Scholarship—preference given to a student pursuing the Master of Music in classical guitar; should no qualified graduate student be found, the award may be made to a junior or senior. 3.0 GPA required. Recipient is to be designated as the Pedro Morrell Scholar. If the recipient is a graduate student, he or she is expected to perform a recital, open to the pubic, each year, with admission to be charged and proceeds to be added to the scholarship fund; the recital shall be sponsored by the Department of Music and shall be titled The Pedro Morell Memorial Recital.

NIERMAN
Clara Nierman Memorial Endowment—for UNM Symphony Orchestra students.

NOBLE
Weston Noble Endowed Choral Scholarship—for students in choral music educaiton or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on merit. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral Activities and will sing with the UNM University Chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

QUEEN ELIZABETH OF BELGIUM
Queen Elizabeth of Belgium Scholarship—for music majors. Renewable upon faculty recommendation.

RAWCLIFFE
Thelma Rawcliffe Memorial Endowment—for an undergraduate or graduate student in piano; student must have intent of becoming a professional piano accompanist. The award is based on merit; selection is based on audition.

RAY
Robert Ray Choral Endowed Scholarship—for students in choral music education or vocal performance singing in a Department of Music choral ensemble. The award is based on merit and need; an African-American student is preferred. Recipients will be chosen by audition by the Director of Choral Activities and will sing with the UNM University chorus and perhaps one other choral ensemble.

ROBERT
George Robert Piano Prize Endowment—for a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in piano. The award is based on talent; student should be a performer of special ability. When student performs in public, he or she should be identified as holding the George Robert Piano Prize.

ROTH
Muriel Roth Memorial Scholarship—full-time upper division undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in music with a concentration in composition or piano.

SCOTT
Scott-Baum Memorial Scholarship/Albuquerque Music Club—for a full-time music major. The award is based on ability and talent.

SIMMS
Albert G. Simms Music Scholarships—for a music major studying strings. Renewable with faculty approval.

SIMSON
Helene Simson Memorial Scholarship–Opera—may be used for scholarships, current opera production expenses, employment of professional/guest artists for production of commissioned operas.

VAN STONE
Berta Hurt Van Stone Memorial Scholarship—for a student majoring in music. The award is based on merit and need. Renewable so long as satisfactory academic progress is maintained.

WHITEHEAD
Samuel & Jetty Rosenwald Whitehead Scholarship Fund—for students in the College of Fine Arts with music emphasis. Renewable.

WHITLOW
Jim Whitlow Art Education and Music Education Scholarship—for a junior, senior or graduate student in music education; recipient must have been born in New Mexico or graduated from a New Mexico high school. The award will be based on merit and need. This scholarship will be shared with the College of Education: it is to be given to a music education student in odd-numbered academic years (2011, 2013....) and to an art education student in even-numbered academic years.

WILKINSON
Scott Wilkinson Music Theory and Composition Scholarship—for an undergraduate or graduate student in composition or theory; 3.0 GPA required. If no student meets the criteria, no award shall be made. Renewable as long as criteria are met.
