Description:
The Abe Franck Assistantship: Named in honor of Dr. Abraham Franck of Minneapolis, this assistantship provides for students to play in the graduate string quartet–the Abe Franck String Quartet. Thanks to a challenge grant initiated by Dr. Franck, the members of the quartet play matching instruments made by David Folland of Northfield, Minnesota.
The Kurt Frederick Assistantship is named in honor of Kurt Frederick (1907-1997), who served as the conductor of the UNM Symphony Orchestra from 1942 until his retirement in 1972.
Qualifications: Preference is given to students wishing to pursue the Master of Music concentration in Performance.
Responsibilities:
The Abe Franck Assistantship: Rehearse and perform in the Abe Franck String Quartet. Other duties will be assigned at the time the contract is issued.
The Kurt Frederick Assistantship: Rehearse and perform in the UNM Symphony Orchestra and in the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Other duties will be assigned at the time the contract is issued.
Stipend: This is a two-year (four-semester) half assistantship, with total workload of 10 hours per week. Contract is by semester, but renewable if work is satisfactory. The stipend is approximately $6,100 per academic year, in addition to a waiver of tuition (exclusive of special course fees) for up to 6 credits per semester (does not apply to summer tuition). Any additional hours, including summer coursework, can be taken at the resident tuition rate.
Application Deadline: Submit Graduate Financial Application Form and all admission application materials by March 1.
Additional Requirements: To be eligible for an assistantship whose duties involve teaching, an international student must demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by the TOEFL: A minimum score of 250 on the computerized version of the test will be required (equivalent to 600 for the paper-based or 100 for the internet version).
