Music to the Max

From the Liner Notes:

The first Habsburg ruler who was known as a patron of the arts was Maximilian I of Austria. Born in 1459 to the Emperor Friedrich III and his Portuguese wife Eleanora, Maximilian ruled from 1486 until his death in 1519. Through his efforts, he was responsible for Germany’s entrance into the mainstream of musical development in the Renaissance. His actions were often guided by a desire for self-aggrandizement, and he commissioned thousands of works from the artists, poets and architects of his time to record his greatness for posterity. This was the motivation for his commissioning of The Triumph of Maximilian I, the celebrated series of woodcuts (several of which depict musicians at court) produced by Hans Burgkmair, Albrecht Dürer and others. On the other hand, evidence also points to Maximilian possessing a genuine love of music, and while he did not compose or play any instrument, he clearly enjoyed being surrounded by the finest music possible.
