Leslie Umphrey is originally from Washington, D.C. She was educated at the University of Richmond in Virginia and received her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. She has sung many and varied roles in both musical theater and opera. Some of these include: Rosalinda and Adele in Die Fledermaus, Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme and Madame Butterfly in Madama Butterfly. She made her European debut as Nedda in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci in Rome and enjoyed critical acclaim in that same role throughout the United States. Her later roles have included Micaela in Bizet's Carmen, Despina in Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte and Pamina in Die Zauberflote. In the early part of the 21st century Ms. Umphrey made her debut performance as Susannah in Carlisle Floyd's opera Susannah. She also continues her work in oratorio and recital with orchestras throughout the United States and recently recorded with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, Poland.
Ms. Umphrey has toured England with an all Mozart program and is a winner of the San Antonio Opera Association competition and a Finalist and winner of the Fredrich Schorr Competition. She has recorded with ALBANY records and OPUS ONE Recordings. She extends her love of contemporary music to her recordings of the Mexican composer Silvestre Reveultas and New Mexican composer John Donald Robb.
Ms. Umphrey is a dedicated teacher. She serves as adjudicator for singing competitions throughout the United States and has served as Chapter President of the National Association Teachers of Singing. She is a member of the voice faculty at the University of New Mexico.
