John Clark received music degrees from Indiana University and Ball State University. He did post-graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he also served as a part-time faculty member in the School of Music from 1967-1970. In 1970, he became Director of Music (administrative) and Director of Choral and Orchestral Activities at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. While there, he founded and served as Music Director for the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. In two years the choral program grew from 33 students in one ensemble to more than 300 students in five different ensembles.
Mr. Clark accepted the position he held at the University of New Mexico in 1972. In addition to having served as conductor of the select Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, he also oversaw the graduate program in Choral Conducting and taught courses in applied conducting, choral methods and techniques and score study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He served as founding Choral Director for the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra from 1973-1979; Music director for the Masterchorale of Albuquerque from 1980-1984; and Music Director for the Albuquerque Boy Choir from 1987-1992. He has also served as chorus director for Opera Southwest.
For more than forty years, Mr. Clark has been an active church musician as Director of Music and as Organist. In 1979, he accepted the position of Organist at First United Methodist Church in Albuquerque and was appointed Director of Music and Performing Arts at the church in 1990. As an organist he has presented organ recitals and church music workshops in fifteen states. As a clinician and guest conductor, Clark has been guest choral and orchestral conductor for workshops, festival and All-State Choruses with high school students, collegiate students and adults in more than 30 states. Mr. Clark is a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and the American Guild of Organists (AGO).
