2009 NORTH AMERICAN SAXOPHONE ALLIANCE
REGION 2 CONFERENCE
Held at unm February 22-23, 2009

The University of New Mexico hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance 2009 Region 2 Conference February 22-23, 2009.  At the invitation of UNM Saxophone Professor, Dr. Eric Lau, more than one hundred saxophonists from nine states congregated for two days full of performances, lectures, clinics, and master classes.  Presenters included Eric Lau, Timothy McAllister, Thomas Liley, David Dees, Tom Meyer, Ryan Janus, David Henderson, Chris Beaty, Greg Fishman, Andrew Dahlke, Doug Lawrence and the saxophone quartet Thrascher.

Among the highlights were the world premiere of Ground Loop by Drew Krouse for tenor saxophone and CD and the American premiere of Linker Augentanz by Karlheinz Stockhausen.  Masterclasses were given by Timothy McAllister, Andrew Dahlke, and Eric Lau, as well a clinic and performances by jazz great Doug Lawrence.  Two large ensemble concerts concluded each evening. 

On Sunday, the UNM Jazz Band, directed by Glenn Kostur, featured tenor saxophone soloists Chris Beaty, Peter Sommer, Greg Fishman and Doug Lawrence on the first half and culminated with a group jam featuring the “Four Tenors” on Things Ain’t What They Used To Be.  The second half featured Randy Hamm, Tim Ishii, Ed Petersen, and Glenn Kostur in the jazz saxophone quartet Thrascher.

The Monday night concert featured the UNM Wind Symphony under the direction of Prof. Eric Rombach-Kendall, with soloists Eric Lau performing Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for alto saxophone and wind orchestra and Timothy McAllister performing John Mackey’s Concerto for soprano saxophone.  Both concerts were well received by an enthusiastic audience of both saxophonists and general concertgoers.
