SUZUKI STRING PROGRAM
What is the Suzuki method? How is it different from traditional instruction?
- Suzuki is a unique combination of philosophy and teaching that centers on the needs and capabilities of children.
- Lessons are short in the beginning and are divided between parent and child.
- Parents are an integral part of each lesson and oversee daily practice.
- All students have weekly private and group lessons, where they enjoy playing and learning together.
- Suzuki lessons are friendly and non competitive, but individual standards are high.
- Suzuki teachers believe that ALL children possess the ability to play well.
- All pieces are memorized, which develops concentration, memory and intonation.
- All students progress through the same graded pieces which means they have a common repertoire to play together.
The Suzuki Program at UNM Music Prep School:
All children will be taught by UNM student interns who are currently studying pedagogy.
Parents are present at each private lesson, taking notes, asking questions and observing.
All lessons are under the direction of the UNM pedagogy faculty via direct observation or video.
All parents attend preparation classes before their children begin. These classes are designed to help them manage home practice, learn to play the violin and be equipped to provide a positive, non-competitive home environment.
UNM provides instruments for parents’ use during these preparation classes.
All children participate in regular performance classes. In addition, they are encouraged to attend Suzuki institutes and other activities sponsored by the local association.
