SCHOLARSHIPS AND ASSISTANTSHIPS

Financial help is available for undergraduate and graduate students wishing to pursue a degree in music or just participate in an ensemble as a non-music major. Both music and academic scholarships are available.

Undergraduate Music Scholarships

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS:

Performance based scholarships are available to students wishing to pursue a degree in music performance or education.
Music Education scholarships are available to students wishing to pursue a degree in music education.
Jazz Performance based scholarships are available to students wishing to pursue a Performance degree with an emphasis in jazz.
Marching Band awards are given to all students that wish to participate in the UNM Spirit Marching Band. These awards do not require an audition.
Sound Pack awards are available to students wishing to play drumset or percussion in the Lobo Basketball Band. Students must audition for this at the end of the fall semester and are paid a stipend for every game they play.

Graduate Assistantships

Two graduate teaching assistantships are available in percussion at the University of New Mexico. Assistantships include a tuition waiver of 6 hours per semester (fall and spring; waiver is exclusive of special course fees). All additional tuition is charged at the resident rate. The workload is 10 hours per week, and the stipend is approximately $5800 per year.

Students interested in applying for one of the two graduate assistant positions are required to send a resume including any teaching and/or performing experience, a repertoire list, and a video tape containing 30 minutes of you teaching a private percussion lesson or rehearsing an ensemble. Students interested in the marching percussion assistantship should also include a portfolio with some marching percussion arrangements (written and/or audio).

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP #1:

• Teach private lessons to some undergraduate BA majors and music minors
• Teach one or two semesters of Music 155 (Orchestral Instruments/Percussion) which is the percussion techniques course for music education majors
• Help the percussion professor with daily operations in the percussion department. These duties may include helping with inventory, maintenance of instruments, masterclasses, etc.
• Help with percussion ensemble and marimba band rehearsals and performances when needed

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP #2:

• Teaching and arranging for the University of New Mexico Spirit Marching drum line
• Possibly teaching a spring semester indoor drum line
• If a spring drum line does not happen that particular year the assistant will be expected to help in the percussion studio

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

• Band and Orchestra tuition scholarships are available for qualified students.
