Level I training involves intensive study of Kodály philosophy, principles, pedagogy and teaching techniques, with particular emphasis on a readiness curriculum for grades K-2 and older beginners. Appropriate repertoire, skills, and teaching strategies for this level are stressed. Course work includes an introduction to American folk music, materials and repertoire for singing games and musical play, study of the folk music of New Mexico and setting up a personal song retrieval system. Daily choral singing as well as basic choral conducting with an emphasis on children’s voices and repertoire will be an important focus of study. Degree in music or strong music background is recommended. Other topics will include:

  • Introduction to Kodály history and philosophy
  • Musicianship/solfege
  • Materials/folk music
  • Music and special learners
  • Choral ensemble experience

The Kodály Sampler course follows an abbreviated Level I schedule for five days, giving participants the opportunity to experience the beginning stages of Kodály training.

clinicians

Joy Anderson, M.M.E., holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Richmond, Va., a Master of Music in Music Education and Level I Orff certification from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and Kodály certification (levels I-III) from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. A 22-year veteran music teacher and conductor, Mrs. Anderson has worked with children from infancy through high school in public and private schools, and works each summer on the staff and planning committee of the James Madison University Children's Choral Camps. She also co-coordinates JMU's Kodály teacher-training courses.

Regina Carlow, Ph.D., holds degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park, The Catholic University of America, Westminster Choir College and an Academic Year Certificate from the Kodály Music Training Institute. She is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of New Mexico, where she teaches courses in choral and general music education. Her book Exploring the Connection between Children’s Literature and Music is published by Libraries Unlimited. Dr. Carlow is the Artistic Director of the UNM Children’s Chorus and is a frequent clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor with youth and high school choruses in and around the state.

Alice M. Hammel, D.M.A., a leader in the field of special learners and music, currently teaches for James Madison University, Christopher Newport University, and St. Andrews School. Dr. Hammel has many years of experience teaching both instrumental and choral music at the elementary and middle school levels. She has presented her research at more than 40 state and national conferences and has published more than 20 articles in professional journals. Dr. Hammel is a contributing author to several resources available through MENC and Connect for Education. Her text titled On Music and Special Learners is also available through Connect for Education.
