A student may study piano as a principal instrument as part of several degree plans at UNM, including the Bachelor of Music in Performance, Theory & Composition, or Jazz Studies, the Bachelor of Arts in Music, the Bachelor of Music Education with Piano Emphasis, the Master of Music in Performance, and the Master of Music in Collaborative Piano. Students in other music degree plans can study piano as a secondary instrument or area of concentration. Qualified non-majors can also take studio instruction in piano if there is room in the instructor's studio. For information on what course number you should enroll in for studio instruction, see the Explanation of Applied Music Course Numbers (PDF, 84 KB).
The piano performance program at UNM offers a comprehensive professional education. Studio instruction is supplemented by classes in piano repertory and piano pedagogy. There are numerous opportunities for performance, including participation in studio classes, studio recitals, accompanying, and chamber music ensembles. Masterclasses with local and internationally-recognized artists further enhance the curriculum. The program is also in regular contact with local teachers and activities. The students of the performance program are often invited to attend international masterclasses in Germany and Italy. In 2005, the Competition Internationalé for piano was held at UNM and attracted some of the finest pianists from all over the world. UNM students were able to attend the finals for this event as either observers or performers.
UNM currently attracts both domestic and international piano students, particularly from Europe and Asia. The program can claim numerous first prize winners and finalists in international piano competitions, winners of international scholarships, and winners in the New Mexico MTNA Competition. Many of our graduates go on to pursue doctoral degrees from the finest piano performance programs in the country.
