degrees offered

All undergraduate music majors at UNM take a one-year survey of Western music history, and most of our degree plans require students to deepen and broaden this introduction through upper-level courses in Western music and/or contemporary world music. Undergraduate students wishing to specialize in music history should follow the degree plan for the Bachelor of Arts in Music, using elective hours for appropriate courses in the field.

At the graduate level, UNM offers a Master of Music in Music History and Literature. Students who plan to pursue a doctorate in musicology should further prepare themselves with keyboard skills and foreign language proficiency.

course offerings for music majors

Course offerings include classes in music from the Medieval era through the contemporary era and in world musics. Resources include a well-stocked Fine Arts Library and an array of student ensembles that perform music from the Middle Ages through the early 21st century.

course offerings for non-majors

The Department offers several courses for non-majors. Unless specifically allowed in the degree plan, these courses cannot be applied toward degree requirements for the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music, or Bachelor of Music Education. Courses for non-majors include:
