Prospective majors must possess a basic level of musical literacy. It is recommended that prospective majors possess a level of keyboard proficiency equivalent to at least a grade I based on the standard educational musical aptitude system.
Prospective students must arrange an audition with the Department of Music here at the University of New Mexico. Admission as a major will depend on the successful completion of the live audition process.
For details about the general application process, click HERE. If you are considering a Music Education major, you should visit the Music Education webpage and consult with a Music Education faculty member. If you are a transfer student, you will need to consult with an advisor about how your credits in music will apply to your coursework at UNM; please contact the Undergraduate Advisor in the Music Department, Professor Keith Lemmons (klemmons@unm.edu), for specific information.
An audition on Tuba/Euphonium is required of all applicants seeking to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance and of all students wishing to take electives in applied music who declare tuba or euphonium as their principal instrument. The recommended audition level for admission into the Bachelor of Music program is calculated with the same criteria used for selecting the New Mexico All-State Honors Band audition list.
TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION: Auditions are held in February or March of each year, in conjunction with interviews and tours of the UNM campus. Late auditions may be scheduled depending on available space in the program. Click HERE for dates and scheduling information.
