    Suggested Study Music:

The following music suggestions are to be used as a guideline for each individual's further musical development.  This is obviously only a partial list of the vast amount of music that is available and acceptable for use.

Charlier, Theo - 36 Etudes Trancendantes
Brandt, Vassily - Orchestra and Last Etudes
Vizzutti, Allen - Trumpet Method, Vols. 1-4

    Other required materials:

All students will be expected to have a professional model B-flat trumpet in excellent working condition.  Performance majors will be required to have a professional C trumpet.  Graduate students will be expected to have piccolo and E-flat trumpets.  Likewise, students will be expected to acquire all necessary mouthpieces and mutes.

GRADING POLICIES

    Lesson Attendance 20%
    Progress and Attiude 50%
    Jury 20%
Supplemental Classes (Studio Class, Orchestral Seminar, Etc. 10%

    Attendance:

Attendance at every lesson is required. Unexcused absences will result in a failing grade
for that lesson.   Two unexcused absences will result in a failing grade for the semester and the student will be expelled from the studio.  Excused absences due to illness or emergency will be made up, if possible.  This policy applies to all Supplemental Classes as well.

    Progress and Attitude:

Students will receive a letter grade in each lesson based on the following:

A = all assignments performed at an exceptional level of improvement and up to your
ability, great attitude, all assigned material covered

B = all assignments performed at a good level of improvement, good attitude, a lot of assigned material covered

C = all assignments performed at an average level of improvement, average attitude, less than expected  assigned material covered

D = all assignments performed at a poor level of improvement, poor attitude, poor assigned material covered

F = unexcused or missed lesson, weak preparation, nothing prepared, unacceptable attitude.

Students with continued poor performance and/or attitudes will be expelled from the studio.

    Jury:

All students are required to perform a final jury for the brass faculty at the end of each
semester. The exceptions are students who perform solo recitals.

Suitable music for juries includes major etudes or solo works and/or orchestral excerpts. Piano accompaniment is required for all music that calls for it. Performing a work on juries without piano when it is needed will result in a lowered jury grade.

Undergraduates must complete required scales and arpeggios in juries in order to pass. Freshmen must perform all major scales, Sophomores must perform all melodic minors, and Juniors must perform all major arpeggios.

    Supplemental Classes:

Studio Class - All students will participate in Studio Class.  Topics/Repertoire to be discussed/performed will be announced prior to each class. Weekly scale tests will be required of all students.

Group Lessons - Most underclassmen will participate in weekly Group Lessons.  Repertoire for these lessons will include solo works and music for trumpet ensemble.

Orchestral Repertoire Seminar - Exceptional underclassmen, upperclassmen and Graduate students can participate in this seminar that focuses solely on orchestral repertoire.  Entrance to this seminar is by audition only.

Grading for all the above Supplemental Classes is based on the same criteria for private lessons.

Attendance at all brass related concerts and masterclasses is required.  Failure to attend could result in a lowered lesson grade.
