Karl Hinterbichler Low Brass Studio
Current Students in the Hinterbichler studio in the Master’s Program:
Tonya Akeley holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas. She has studied with Vern Kagarice, John Engelkes, Larry Isaacson and John Kitzman. While living in Alaska, she served as personnel manager and principal trombonist with the Anchorage Symphony. While living in California, she freelanced in the San Francisco bay area and performed regularly with the Women’s Philharmonic, Berkeley Symphony and Diablo Valley Ballet Orchestra. She continues to perform each summer at the Mendocino Music Festival. Currently, she teaches a large studio of private students in Albuquerque and performs with Opera Southwest. She has also performed with the New Mexico Symphony and the Santa Fe Symphony.
Wes Babcock is currently in his first year of study at UNM as a graduate student. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA. While at VSU, Wes performed in many ensembles, including University Ensembles as well as professional groups like the Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra, the Albany Opera Orchestra, and the Ed Barr Jazz Orchestra. Wes is a jazz Teaching Assistant at UNM, where he also plays with the Wind Symphony and the Jazz Ensemble. His primary teachers include Steve Pruitt, Doug Farwell, and Karl Hinterbichler.
Scott Beaver holds an undergraduate degree from Tennessee Tech University where he studied with noted pedagogue Winston Morris and was a member of the renowned Tech Tuba Ensemble. He was a concerto contest winner at Tech as well as with the Arapahoe Philharmonic, Kingsville Wind Symphony and the UNM Orchestra. He has performed professionally with the Santa Fe Symphony and is currently tubist with the New Mexico Brass Quintet.
Dan Kinsman grew up in Vernon, CT. He holds an undergraduate in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He taught public school music for the 2003/2004 school year in Norwich, CT and is now getting working on a Master of Music Education degree at UNM. He enjoys being outdoors running, biking, alpine skiing and sampling fine New Mexican cuisine.
Originally from Minnesota, Shawn Scheff received an undergraduate degree in trombone performance from Oberlin, where he studied with former principal trombonist of the Cleveland Orchestra, James DeSano. At UNM Shawn has an assistantship working with the Jazz Bands; he also performs with the UNM Orchestra and Wind Symphony
Jason Settlemoir received an undergratuate degree in Music Education. After teaching public school he decided to return to get a master’s degree in performance. He is a low brass clinician for Albuquerque area schools and at UNM performs with the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony.
Jason Sulliman holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts where he studied with Dave Sporny. Additional studies were at Carnegie Melon University with Pittsburgh Symphony bass trombonist Murray Crewe. Jason was a trombonist in the touring production of BLAST. He has performed with the New Mexico Symphony and is a professional drill writer for a number of marching bands across the country. At UNM he has an assistantship working with the Marching Band.

Recently graduated students:
Brian Dobbins (tuba) – performed one season as tubist with the Xalapa Symphony (oldest full-time professional orchestra in Mexico). Currently Prof. Of Tuba/Euphonium at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
Scott Beaver (tuba) - won a position with the United States Military Academy Band at West Point
Doug Baughman (tuba) – free lance performer and teacher in Houston, Texas.
Joel Chavarria (trombone) – working on a Master’s degree at University of North Texas (with assistantship) At UNM Joel was a featured soloist with the Wind Symphony.
Jason Oliver (bass trombone) – accepted into the DMA program at North Texas (with scholarship)
David Proctor (bass trombone) – auditioned for and accepted into the Army Band
Garner Mathiasmeier (trombone) – elementary school music teaching position in Las Vegas, Nevada
