Karl Hinterbichler Low Brass Studio

Applied Music Grading Policy - Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Grades in this course will be determined using the following criteria:

1. Non-music majors will be graded every lesson based strictly on preparation of the assigned material and improvement. The lowest lesson grade will be dropped in computing the final average. Missing a lesson without prior excuse is an automatic F for that lesson. Every effort will be made to make-up lessons due to illness or professional commitments. Non-majors must perform for the brass jury at the end of the semester.

2. Music majors will be awarded a letter grade for every lesson. The lowest grade will be dropped when computing the final grade. Missing a lesson without prior excuse is an automatic F for that lesson. Every effort will be made to make up lessons due to illness or professional commitments. Your preparation of assigned material and rate of improvement will be the determining factors for the weekly lesson grades. The lesson grades will count as 60% of your semester grade.

3. Music majors must perform on at least one concert music each semester; or some other venue in a solo capacity. First year students may be exempted. Such performances will count as 20% of your final grade.

4. All students must perform for the brass jury at the end of the semester. The only exceptions to this are the semester that a recital is given or if you have completed all the applied requirements for your degree program. The jury grade will count as 20% of your final grade. The jury includes performance of a solo with piano accompaniment, sight-reading and required scales.

5. The following grading standards will be used:
A = excellent
B = good
C = average
D = below average
F = failing

The vast majority of achievements are average. A few are good and still fewer are excellent. Although we must always strive for it, excellence is thus reserved for the highest achievements. For by its definition it applies to any quality or feature in which the person excels or surpasses all others.
