Recital Prerequisites

  • Be currently enrolled in the College of Fine Arts
  • Have completed MUS 252 Theory IV and MUS 252L Theory IV Aural Lab
  • For a senior recital, have completed both MUS 361 History of Music I and MUS 362 History of Music II
  • Be currently enrolled in either APMS 391 Junior Recital or APMS 491 Senior Recital, as applicable.

Any exception to the above policies must be approved by the department chair.

recital preview

A preview of the recital, performed for the appropriate faculty must occur before the recital is presented.  Normally recital previews are held two to three weeks in advance of the recital date.  The student will not be permitted to give the recital unless a preview is passed.  Recitals are required by the various degree plans as follows:

Policies for Student Recitals in Keller Hall

  1. Keller Hall is available free of charge for students giving required degree recitals.  All other student usage is subject to the customary public rental charges, unless exception is approved by the department chair.

  2. Arrange for a recital date and dress rehearsal time by contacting the Keller Hall Office.  Students are permitted to reserve Keller Hall for Fall semester beginning October 1 for the Spring semester and May 1 for the Fall semester.  These dates are subject to change; check with the Keller Hall Office for updated information. You are strongly advised to book your recital date as soon as possible after the October or May date; otherwise, you will have very few options, especially if you desire an April or May recital date.

  3. You will need to submit a copy of your recital program to the Keller Hall Office at least two weeks in advance for typing and copying.  Programs submitted late may not be printed.  This deadline is subject to change; check with the Keller Hall Office for updated information.

Consult the Keller Hall Office for information on all procedures associated with giving a recital in Keller Hall, including use of pianos, arranging for rehearsal time, equipment needed, and lighting.  Rehearsal time in the hall for a student recital is normally limited to 2 hours.

  4. Appropriate attire will be expected of all students performing recitals in Keller Hall.  Consult your applied teacher for advice on appropriate performance attire.

  5. Use of the pianos in Keller Hall:

In order to maintain the newer Steinway concert grand in top condition, the following policy has been adopted.  The newer piano will be allowed for the following:

  1. Faculty recitals
  2. Visiting artists
  3. Graduate degree recitals by piano majors
  4. Junior and senior degree recitals by piano majors
  5. Emergency use when the other piano is not able to be used (broken string, etc.)
  6. Other uses with written authorization only (from Department chair or piano area chair)

Prohibited use:  Prepared piano and inside-the-piano works

NOTE:  While such use does not generally cause any permanent damage, it can often cause a minor problem that makes the piano temporarily unusable (damper felt displaced, screw between strings causing a bad unison, etc.).  Most “inside-the-piano” pieces work better on a smaller piano anyway, as string nodes for harmonics are easier to reach, and the arrangement of dampers and plate bars works better.  George Crumb’s works, for example, work specifically on Steinway models M and L (5’ 8” and 6’ 3”), not on concert grand pianos.  There is a model M Steinway in B134, which is on a piano dolly and is easy to move into Keller Hall if needed.  This piano was substantially rebuilt during the summer of 2000.  It is probably the most appropriate piano for most prepared and inside-the-piano works; alternatively, the older concert grand in Keller Hall may be used.

RECITAL RECORDINGS

There is a $50 fee (price subject to change) for recordings made of student recitals.  This fee entitles you to one complete recording of your recital; additional copies may be purchased for $10.00 each (price subject to change).  You must arrange for recordings with the Department’s Recording Engineer (Manny Rettinger, Room 1136, manrett@unm.edu) at least 30 days prior to your recital.  Failure to meet this deadline may mean that your recital cannot be recorded.

NOTE:  Recordings of some (not all) ensemble performances may be available for purchase at $20.00 per copy (price subject to change).  Check with the Keller Hall Office for ordering information and procedures.
