GRADUATION WITH HONORS

A Departmental Honors program is available to qualified students in the Department of Music.  The purposes of the departmental honors program is 1) to intensify and deepen students’ knowledge in their major field; 2) to correlate this knowledge with knowledge acquired in related fields and in the larger area of students’ university education; and 3) to bring students under closer guidance of, and into closer acquaintance with, teachers in their field.  Departmental honors involves an honors project, the content and presentation of which will vary according to the area of study.  A special recital, with significant program notes, is also appropriate.  Any honors project must be approved by the instructor who is requested to serve as the faculty tutor.

Application for departmental honors must be submitted at least two semesters prior to graduation.  An application form and more complete information are available from the College of Fine Arts Advisement Office, Rm.1103.

To be eligible for the departmental honors program, the applicant must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a minimum of 60 hours in residence at UNM.  The minimum requirement for graduation with department honors is six credit hours of MUS 499 Senior Thesis.  Applicants should have demonstrated a high level of maturity, pursuit of excellence, and the ability to work and think independently.
