FEES:
Keller Hall is available free of charge for students giving required degree recitals. All other student usage is subject to the customary public rental charges, unless exception is approved by the department chair.
SCHEDULING:
Arrange for a recital date and dress rehearsal time by contacting the Keller Hall Office. Students are permitted to reserve Keller Hall beginning October 1 for the Spring semester and May 1 for the Fall semester. (These dates are subject to change; check with the Keller Hall Office for updated information). You are strongly advised to book your recital date as soon as possible after the October or May date; otherwise, you will have very few options, especially if you desire an April or May recital date.
Recitals may be performed only when classes are officially in session. Recitals cannot be scheduled during holidays, intersessions or final exam week. All recitals must be scheduled through the Keller Hall Office, even if they are to be given off campus. This is to ensure that there are no conflicts with other events, such as ensemble concerts. You must be sure that all the members of your committee are able to attend the recital on the scheduled date.
REHEARSAL TIME, EQUIPMENT:
Consult the Keller Hall Office for information on all procedures associated with giving a recital in Keller Hall, including use of pianos, arranging for rehearsal time, equipment needed, lighting. Rehearsal time in the hall for a student recital is normally limited to two hours.
PROGRAM & PROGRAM NOTES:
DEGREE RECITALS: After they have been approved by your advisory committee, your program and program notes will be submitted by the Graduate Coordinator to the Keller Hall Office to be printed for your recital. These must be accompanied by a "Program Notes Approval to Print" form, which must be signed by the Graduate Coordinator. Do not submit a copy of your program and notes directly to the Keller Hall Office.
OTHER RECITALS: If you want the Keller Hall Office staff to type your program and program notes, the notes must be submitted at least two weeks in advance of your recital. If you will be submitting the program and notes "camera-ready," they must be submitted at least one week before the recital. For camera-ready copy, the Keller Hall Office prefers electronic submission, as an attachment via e-mail; this may be sent in addition to the hard copy. Programs submitted late may not be printed. Deadlines for submission are subject to change; check with the Keller Hall Office for updated information.

Appropriate attire will be expected of all students performing recitals in Keller Hall. Consult your applied teacher for advice on appropriate performance attire.

If you wish to have flowers onstage, consult your applied teacher for approval.
ENCORES:
Encores are not appropriate for a student degree recital.
receptions:
Receptions are allowed in the Green Room only for recitals that begin at 8:00 p.m. If you wish to have a reception elsewhere in the building, please obtain permission and make arrangements with the Music Office.
use of pianos:
Use of the Keller Hall Pianos: In order to maintain the newer Steinway concert grand in top condition, the following policy has been adopted. The new piano will be allowed for the following:
- Faculty recitals
- Visiting artists
- Graduate degree recitals by piano majors
- Junior and senior degree recitals by piano majors
- Emergency use when the other piano is not able to be used (broken string, etc.)
- Other uses with written authorization only (from Department chair or piano area chair)
- Prohibited use* : Prepared piano and inside-the-piano works.
*NOTE: While such use does not generally cause any permanent damage, it can often cause a minor problem that makes the piano temporarily unusable (damper felt displaced, screw between strings causing a bad unison, etc.). Most “inside-the-piano” pieces work better on a smaller piano anyway, as string nodes for harmonics are easier to reach, and the arrangement of dampers and plate bars works better. George Crumb’s works, for example, work specifically on Steinway models M and L (5’ 8” and 6’ 3”), not on concert grand pianos. There is a model M Steinway in B134, which is on a piano dolly and is easy to move into Keller Hall if needed. This piano was substantially rebuilt during the summer of 2000. It is probably the most appropriate piano for most prepared and inside-the-piano works; alternatively, the older concert grand in Keller Hall may be used.
