back to Table of Contents

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint you with those departmental regulations that are important to your total experience as a music student and to your progress in the degree program you select. We hope that this handbook answers most of your questions. Be sure to call, write, or meet with the Graduate Coordinator or your major professor should any other concerns arise. It is your responsibility to obtain the information you need.

curricular requirements

At the time you submit your Program of Studies form, you may choose which catalog edition you wish to follow, beginning with the one in effect at the time you enter the Graduate Program.  You must also follow any supplemental policies and regulations that appear in the Department of Music Graduate Student Handbook.  The Handbook is updated on a continuous basis, as departmental and university policies change.

Not all graduate policies affecting music students are included in this handbook. It is your responsibility to stay in touch with the Department of Music Graduate Coordinator and to consult the appropriate sources for the most recent information on policies that may affect your degree program. Besides this handbook, these sources include:

deadlines and procedures

The main body of this handbook is arranged in the series of steps you should take as a graduate student, from application through graduation. No steps may be omitted or done out of order. Nearly every step is accompanied by forms that must be completed and returned in a timely manner. Deadlines are often rigid, and it is your responsibility to keep abreast of them. Requirements for each degree program are outlined, and checklists are included so that you may be reminded of requirements during your studies as a graduate student.
